About product

BT-7A wheel-cum-track tank with the F-32 gun 1:72 — UM

This injection-molded plastic kit captures the Soviet fast BT-7A wheel-cum-track tank armed with the F-32 gun, in 1:72 scale. The maker is the Ukrainian brand UM. The package holds five sprues of parts, a decal sheet, a photo-etched fret and assembly instructions with a painting diagram; the instructions are in Ukrainian and English. The finished model is 78 mm long. It is a short-run model with a large number of small parts, which will be appreciated above all by more experienced builders.

The real subject

The Soviet BT tank series grew out of a design that could run on tracks and, once the tracks were taken off, directly on its wheels — hence the term wheel-cum-track. The machines were exceptionally fast for their day, but they paid for that quality with thin armor. The BT-7A version was an artillery conversion: it received a larger turret and, instead of a small-caliber anti-tank gun, carried a 76.2 mm gun intended to support advancing tank and infantry units with fire against fortifications and soft targets. The F-32 gun belonged to the newer generation of Soviet tank guns of the late 1930s. The combination of a large turret and a heavier gun on the fast BT chassis is one of the most interesting and least common chapters of Soviet prewar armor.

Building and painting tips

Build the running gear with the wheels and the suspension before you close the hull. Cut the parts off with a sharp scalpel and clean them up with a file, because short-run molds leave more excess material on the parts. Bend the photo-etched parts over a sharp edge and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue. Painting: an overall Soviet dark green base, highlights on the upper surfaces, a dark wash into the seams and the riveting, dry-brushing on the edges. Create dust and mud on the running gear and the lower hull with pigments — on a fast wheel-cum-track tank this is a very typical feature.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Soviet prewar armor
  • Anyone interested in the development line of fast wheel-cum-track tanks
  • Modelers with experience of short-run kits and photo-etched parts
  • Builders of small dioramas in 1:72 scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The machines of the BT series could run on tracks and also, once the tracks were taken off, directly on the wheels of the running gear. That let them reach high speeds on made-up roads.

It is the artillery version with a larger turret and a 76.2 mm gun instead of a small-caliber gun. It served to support units with fire against fortifications and soft targets.

Five sprues of plastic parts, a photo-etched fret, decals and assembly instructions with a painting diagram in Ukrainian and English.

Rather not. It is a short-run kit with a number of small parts and photo-etched details, and it calls for a sharp knife, tweezers and dry-fitting.
