About product

Curtiss Tomahawk Mk.IIB 1:72 — an AML masking set

This product is a set of masking stickers for a model of the Curtiss Tomahawk Mk.IIB fighter in 1:72 scale, not a kit and not decals. It is precisely in the small 1:72 scale that a masking set makes the most sense: the canopy frames here are only a few tenths of a millimeter wide and cutting tape by hand often ends in a wavy or uneven line. A pre-cut mask holds its shape exactly and the paint boundary has the same width on both sides of the canopy.

The real subject

Tomahawk Mk.IIB was the British designation of the Curtiss P-40 series fighter in one of its early versions, delivered to the Commonwealth under wartime supply. It was powered by the liquid-cooled Allison V-1710 V12, which had no high-altitude supercharger, so the aircraft excelled rather at low and medium altitudes. The type saw considerable service in North Africa and on other fronts, where its robust structure and resilience in field conditions were valued. Its characteristic features are the large radiator under the nose and the long cowling of the V engine.

Masking and painting tips

In 1:72 scale the masks are small, so work with sharp tweezers and good lighting. Wash and dry the glazing in advance, so that no greasy film is left on it. Lay the mask on dry, check its position against the engraved frames and only then press it down around the whole perimeter — run a toothpick along the edge so that it seals perfectly. Spray the paint square to the surface and in several light passes; sprayed at an angle, the paint gets under the edge of the mask. It works well to spray the interior shade first and then a coat of the exterior covering shade. Lift the mask with tweezers or the tip of a toothpick by the edge, not by the center.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Curtiss Tomahawk Mk.IIB models in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who find masking tape hard to cut in a small scale
  • Those who want consistent, straight canopy frames
  • Anyone interested in Allied fighters of the early period of the Second World War

This is a masking set, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A set of shaped self-adhesive masks for painting the glazing of a model in 1:72 scale. The model and the paints are not included.

A sprayed frame has the same texture as the rest of the model and creates neither a step nor the glossy film that tends to show on a decal over glass.

Once it is positioned, run a toothpick or a wooden stick along the whole edge. An edge that has not been pressed down is the commonest cause of paint running underneath.

The masks are designed for a single use. Once lifted they lose their adhesion and the edge no longer seals reliably.
