An injection-molded plastic kit of the F-35A version in 1:72 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Hasegawa. This is a limited edition with the markings of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force and with the configuration nicknamed Beast Mode. The breakdown of parts and the stores are given in the instructions enclosed with the model.
The F-35A Lightning II is a single-seat, single-engine multirole aircraft with a reduced radar signature, intended for conventional takeoff and landing from a paved runway. The designation Beast Mode is used for the mode in which the aircraft carries armament not only in the internal weapons bays but also on external pylons under the wing. It therefore carries a markedly greater load, but at the cost of a higher radar signature, so it is a configuration for situations where concealment of the flight is no longer a priority. The Japan Air Self-Defense Force introduced the type as a replacement for older machines.
The smooth surfaces of the airframe give away every imperfection in a joint, so it pays to sand the seams down and rescribe the engraved lines. Finish the cockpit before closing the fuselage up, and glue the stores on only at the end, so that they do not get in the way while painting. The gray low-observable finish looks better if, after the base layer, you shade it slightly panel by panel; use a gloss varnish under the decals and even the surface out with a semi-matte one.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
