An injection-molded plastic kit of a two-seat jet aircraft in 1:72 scale. The release is devoted to the end of Phantom service with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force and to the machine carrying the number 440 in a commemorative scheme. The number of parts, the extent of the decal sheet and the number of options offered are given on the packaging. Hasegawa released several different boxes for the last period of the type's service, which differ precisely in the scheme and the marking of the particular machine.
The F-4EJ Kai is the upgraded version of the Japanese licensed variant of the F-4E Phantom II. The upgrade concerned above all the radar, the avionics and the fire control systems, so the type stayed in service considerably longer than originally reckoned. Externally it is still a two-seat twin-engine machine with a tandem cockpit, upturned outer wing panels and drooped horizontal tail surfaces. As the type was retired, selected machines received commemorative colors that differ markedly from the standard service finish.
Commemorative schemes are usually more saturated and more contrasting than an ordinary service finish, so spray them with an airbrush through masks and work from the lighter shades to the darker ones. Finish both cockpit positions before closing the fuselage up; mask the canopy before the surfacer. Seat the large decals on a glossy intermediate varnish and fix them with a decal softener, otherwise visible edges will be left on the engraved lines. Assemble and paint the external stores and the landing gear separately. Finish the model with a varnish matching the character of the scheme — with commemorative colors a semi-matte one tends to suit better than a deeply matte one.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
