A figure set of soft plastic in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Strelets-R, aimed by theme at French artillery in the time of the Egyptian campaign. The set belongs among the accessories for dioramas, not among kits of hardware. The figures are supplied unpainted and unglued.
The French expedition to Egypt at the end of the 18th century was an operation far from home bases, in an environment a European army was not used to. Artillery in such conditions dealt mainly with moving materiel, with dust in the mechanisms and with a shortage of water for the crew. Uniforms adapted to the climate, were supplemented with lighter headdresses and with items acquired locally, so the appearance of the units gradually departed from the European standard. It is precisely this mismatch that makes the theme a rewarding subject for a diorama.
A crew set makes the most sense set into a scene where the crew has something to do. Stand the figures on a surface with fine sand sifted through a sieve and fixed with thinned dispersion glue, add a few stones and a dry stalk. Keep the whole scene in warm ocher and beige tones in color and let the uniforms stand out as the only richer element. Once painted, apply a light dusty touch to the lower parts of the legs and to the equipment, either with a dry brush or with very thinned paint. Soft plastic is glued only by cyanoacrylate and paint lasts on it only after a flexible primer has been applied. Cut the sprue gates off with a scalpel in a stroke and do not scrape the surface, as on a soft material grooves stay visible even under paint.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
