Techmod 1:72 decals — Mitsubishi G4M1

A sheet of waterslide decals from the Polish manufacturer Techmod in 1:72 with the markings of the Japanese twin-engine Mitsubishi G4M1 bomber, known under the Allied code name Betty. The set serves as a replacement for, or an addition to, the decals from a kit. The package holds the decals only; the model and paints are not part of it.

The real subject

The G4M was a land-based bomber of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service designed for operations over the vast spaces of the Pacific. The designers staked everything on very long range, and that at the expense of armor and protection of the fuel tanks. The aircraft therefore managed exceptional distances, but when hit it was vulnerable, which earned it an unflattering reputation. The G4M1 form is the first production version with the characteristic cigar-shaped fuselage and glazed nose. The Allied code names, among which Betty belongs, served for quickly recognizing types in reports.

Use and tips

Clear-coat the model with a gloss coat before applying the decals, otherwise the edges of the film will silver on the large areas of the fuselage. Cut the motifs off close to the print, soak them briefly and move them into place with a brush. A softener will help the film embrace the glazing, the ribbing and the transitions by the engine nacelles. Check the colored bands on the tail surfaces against the axis of the model; a deviation is conspicuous on a finished piece. Once dry, even the sheen out with a matte coat matching the matte finish of the day.
