About product

Painting masks for the Gloster E.28/39 in 1:72 scale from Clear Prop Models

A set of pre-cut painting masks for a model of the first British jet aircraft in 1:72 scale. It is neither a kit nor decals. The masks follow the shape of the cockpit glazing frames and the circular outline of the tires, so the lengthy cutting of masks from tape falls away. The exact number and layout of the individual mask parts are given on the box of the set.

The real subject

The Gloster E.28/39 was the first British aircraft with jet propulsion. It flew in 1941 and was built as a purely research machine to prove that the new powerplant could be used in flight. It was a single-seat low-wing aircraft with a nose air intake, a short stubby fuselage and a nose-wheel landing gear, that is with a layout that became typical for jet aircraft for many years. Two prototypes were built and neither of them ever carried armament. The importance of this machine lies in the fact that it opened the way for the British aviation industry to its first combat jet types.

How the masks are used

Carefully lift a mask off the backing with tweezers and lay it on clean, degreased glazing. Press it down from the center outward, so that no air is trapped under it, and smooth the edges with a toothpick or a wooden stick. The recommended procedure is to spray the interior shade first and then the base color of the airframe. Apply the paint in several thin coats, so that it does not run under the edge. Take the mask off while the paint is still fresh, again with tweezers and at a sharp angle. On the wheels, the tire is masked so that the hub can be sprayed comfortably, or the other way around depending on the painting sequence you choose.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who want sharp, even canopy frames without cutting masks by hand
  • builders who struggle to separate the wheel hub from the tire cleanly
  • anyone after quicker and cleaner airbrush work in a small scale
  • collectors of pioneering British jet aircraft

This is a modeling accessory. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a set of painting masks, that is an accessory for painting a model. The model itself has to be obtained separately.

Best shortly after spraying, while the paint is still fresh. They are lifted with tweezers at a sharp angle, so that the paint does not tear at the edge.

So that the shade of the hub can be separated cleanly from the tire. Following a circular outline by hand with a brush is usually inaccurate in 1:72 scale.

The procedure for applying and lifting is similar for all pre-cut masks; the material used is given on the box of the set.
