About product

Hawker Siddeley Buccaneer, part one - decals 1:72 (Print Scale)

This is a decal sheet in 1:72 scale for the British Buccaneer strike aircraft. It is not a kit and not an accessory in plastic but a set of markings which you transfer onto a model already built and painted. The words part one mean that the manufacturer has divided the subject into several separate sheets and this is one of them. How many schemes the sheet contains and which particular aircraft it offers are given on the packaging of the sheet.

The real subject

The Buccaneer was a British twin-engine carrier strike aircraft designed for attack from extremely low altitude, where enemy radar picks it up as late as possible. It was created originally as the Blackburn NA.39 and after the maker was merged into the Hawker Siddeley group it carried that name. Its fuselage was shaped according to the area rule, which gave it the characteristic waist in the middle, and for a short deck launch it used blowing of the leading edges and the flaps with compressed air from the engines. Among other things it carried its weapons in a rotating bomb bay door, which did not swing out into the airflow on release. The S.1 version had Gyron Junior turbojets, the more powerful S.2 Spey turbofans. It was in service with both the Fleet Air Arm and the Royal Air Force and flew until the 1990s.

Tips for using the decals

Decals belong on a glossy surface. Matte varnish has a microscopically broken surface, air stays under a decal and a silvery gray haze appears. So varnish the model with gloss first, cut the decal out as close as possible, soak it in clean lukewarm water and let it release on a piece of paper. Transfer it onto an area moistened beforehand with a drop of water, as it can then be slid into position. Blot the excess water away with a cloth from the center toward the edges. On engraved lines and rivets a decal softener helps; once dry the film is drawn into the relief and looks like a sprayed finish. Finally seal everything with a matte or satin coat according to the character of the finish.

Who the sheet is for

  • Builders of British aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers for whom the markings supplied in a kit are not enough
  • Those who want to build a particular machine with a different finish
  • Collectors of decal sheets on one subject

The package contains decals only. A kit, paints and varnishes are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. The package contains only a decal sheet in 1:72 scale. A Buccaneer kit has to be owned or bought separately.

The manufacturer has divided the subject into separate sheets, each offering a different set of markings. Which machine is on which sheet is given on the packaging of the sheet; the sheets do not overlap in content.

A matte surface is microscopically broken, air stays under the film and a decal gets a silvery haze around it. The surface therefore has to be glossy, and matting is done only with the final coat.

On a smooth area you can manage without one, but on engraved lines, rivets and rounded transitions it pays off. The film softens and is drawn into the relief, so the marking looks sprayed on.
