About product

A 3.5 t truck of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, the UNMISS mission, 1:72 (Fujimi)

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from the Japanese maker Fujimi. The subject is a heavy truck of the 3.5 ton class of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, in the release associated with the service of the Japanese engineer contingent in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan. The model adds to the range of small Japanese vehicles that Fujimi has long issued in this scale.

The real subject

Trucks of this weight class form the backbone of supply and transport for the Japanese ground forces. The all-wheel-drive vehicle is used to carry personnel as well as materiel and, with an interchangeable body, it also serves as a chassis for special purposes. Equipment assigned under UN command differs from ordinary unit vehicles above all in its finish and markings: instead of field camouflage the machine tends to be in a uniform light shade with the international markings of the mission. It is exactly that contrast that makes the model a welcome addition to a collection of modern vehicles as well as a rewarding subject for a small diorama.

Building and painting tips

In 1:72 scale the vehicle is small and a lot of detail lies on the surface, so thin cement for plastic applied with a fine brush pays off; it runs into the seam and does not clog the engraving. Before painting we recommend a filler primer, otherwise a light finish behaves differently on plastic and on filled areas. A light shade has weaker covering power, so spray it thinly and in several layers over a white or light gray base. It is more convenient to paint the frame, the wheels and the underside of the chassis before assembly. At the end a fine wash in the engraved lines and a discreet dust pigment on the wheels and fenders come in useful, so that the vehicle does not look like a toy. Apply the decals onto a glossy base and go over them with a flat clear coat.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of modern Japanese military vehicles in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who build the subjects of peacekeeping missions and UN equipment
  • Builders of small dioramas where an escorting truck is needed
  • Moderately advanced modelers used to the smaller scale and small parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a classic injection-molded plastic kit that has to be cut from the sprues, cemented together and painted. Glue and paints are not included in the package.

It is the abbreviation of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, whose deployment this release relates to. Vehicles under UN command can be recognized by their light finish and international markings.

For the UN release a uniform light shade is used. We recommend spraying it in several thin layers over a light base, because light colors cover less well. The particular shades recommended by the manufacturer are given in the instructions in the package.

It is a kit for the moderately advanced rather than a beginner. The 1:72 scale means small parts that call for a steady hand, but the construction of a truck is simple and straightforward.
