An injection-molded plastic kit of the Type 61 tank of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force in 1:72 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Pit-Road. With armor the small 1:72 scale pays off wherever there is a shortage of room in a display case or where the vehicle is to form part of a larger scene - the finished model takes up only a few centimeters. The Type 61 was the first tank of indigenous postwar Japanese design, taken into service at the beginning of the 1960s. It came about so that the Self-Defense Forces could replace older American equipment with a vehicle adapted to Japanese conditions - smaller dimensions and lower weight because of bridge capacities and rail transport. The vehicle carried a 90 mm gun in a rotating turret and had the classic layout with the engine at the rear. It remained in service for several decades before newer types gradually replaced it.
Start with the running gear - at this scale what matters is that the wheels and tracks sit in one plane, otherwise the model will rock on its base. Fill and sand the seams on the hull and the turret before you start painting; later you will no longer reach them. Apply the paint thinly; a heavy coat would flood the fine cast detail at this small scale. Choose the shade according to the period of service - Self-Defense Force vehicles appeared both in a single-color green finish and in a later two-color scheme. Finally add dust and deposits on the underside of the hull; it is that which gives a small model its sense of scale.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
