QMT 1:72 Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden Kai (George) — wheel bay masks is a set of pre-cut masks thanks to which the transition between the color of the bay and the camouflage comes out sharp and with no touching up.
Responsibility details are not available.
This set from QMT is not an accessory that would be built or glued on. They are self-adhesive masks cut to the shape of the wheel bays. You apply them onto the finished, painted interior of the bay, spray the outside of the model and lift the masks off. The dividing edge then runs exactly along the outline of the opening.
It is on Japanese machines that masking the bays pays off the most, because the color of the interior tends to be markedly different from the outside. Their internal structure is often represented with a translucent blue-green lacquer called aotake, while elsewhere a gray-green or an aluminum shade is used. The difference against the dark green upper surfaces and the light underside is so great that any blurring of the edge is visible at once. Check the specific shade for your own machine in the references supplied with the kit, because it differed by the maker of the airframe and by the period.
The Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden Kai, given the Allied designation George, was a Japanese single-engine fighter of low-wing layout that came about by reworking an older floatplane design into a land-based machine. It was precisely the move of the landing gear and its shortening that gave the bays their characteristic shape, which the set respects.
The set contains masks only, and paints and kits are supplied separately.
