The first part of a sheet of decals in 1:72 scale focused on the American M3 medium tank in Soviet use. It is an accessory for a kit; a model is not included in the package. The set is interesting in that it combines American vehicles with the markings of another army, a subject that the usual decals from the box mostly do not cover. The extent of the sheet and the list of machines covered are given by the maker on the box.
The M3 was a stopgap solution from a time when no turret capable of carrying a 75 mm gun was yet available. The main weapon therefore sits in the right side of the hull in a sponson with limited traverse, while the rotating turret holds a smaller 37 mm gun with a machine gun cupola above it. The vehicle was tall, with a radial engine at the rear and a riveted or welded hull depending on the production batch. It reached foreign service under wartime deliveries and in its new setting it was committed where other vehicles were in short supply.
The tall hull of the M3 means a lot of vertical surfaces and transitions, so try the position of the markings dry first. The riveted variants are the hardest for decals: the film has to wrap around the individual rivets, otherwise air will be trapped under it. A heavier gloss base, more coats of decal softener and a gentle prick of any bubbles with the tip of a scalpel, followed by another dose of softener, all help. Once it has dried, flatten the finish and add the weathering. On this type, worn paint on the edges and dust caught in the riveted joints both look good.
This is an accessory, namely decals. The kit, paints and varnishes are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
