About product

1:72 Su-17M3 BASIC masks (New Ware)

A masking set in 1:72 scale for a model of the Su-17M3 fighter-bomber. It contains a sheet of self-adhesive masks machine-cut to the shape of the particular Modelsvit 72047 kit, so the masks fit the frames of the canopy and the windscreen with no further trimming or cutting. With New Ware the BASIC designation states the coverage of the set: it is the smallest grade of the line, aimed at the main glazing. The wider ADVANCED and EXPERT grades add further masking beyond the cockpit. The manufacturer states the exact contents of the sheet on the packaging.

Why a mask instead of a decal or tape

The cockpit frames have a sharp plastic edge on a model. A sprayed frame is therefore always more faithful than a decal, which breaks over the edge, shines and in time lifts. Trimming tape by hand straight on the model, in turn, risks scratching the clear part with the knife and gives frames of uneven width. A pre-cut mask does away with both: the widths are the same and symmetrical all over the model.

Recommended procedure

Lift the masks from the backing with sharp tweezers or the point of a scalpel, lay them in place and press them down with a wooden stick or a gloved finger, so that the edge seats perfectly. Spray the glazing with the cockpit interior color first and only then with the outer camouflage; the transition then shows nowhere. Spray thin coats: a heavy coat of paint builds a ridge at the edge of the mask that stays visible when it is lifted. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, not weeks later, so that the adhesive does not harden. It is worth keeping the rest of the sheet: the cut lattice and the offcuts come in useful for masking small areas on other models.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want sharp and symmetrical cockpit frames without trimming by hand
  • Builders of Soviet and Eastern aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Those who spray with an airbrush and need reliable cover on the clear parts
  • Beginners who are still wary of masking; the set makes the work much simpler

The package contains masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a masking set, an accessory for a model. The package contains neither the kit itself nor paints or glue.

It is the grade of coverage of the set at New Ware. BASIC is the smallest version, aimed at the main glazing, while the ADVANCED and EXPERT grades offer masking over a wider range. The manufacturer states the exact contents of the particular sheet on the packaging.

No. The masks are cut to the shape of the kit they are intended for, which is named with the product. On another model of the same type they usually will not fit exactly.

Shortly after the paint has dried. If they are left longer the adhesive hardens and they come off less easily, and on clear parts they may leave marks.
