This injection-molded plastic kit captures the heavy MAZ-543M special-purpose truck in the form with the body of a mobile medical laboratory. It is a classic model to be glued together and painted, not a finished collector's piece. 1:72 scale is popular with military and special-purpose machinery mainly because even a large four-axle chassis stays compact in a display case and combines well with aircraft and dioramas of the same scale.
The MAZ-543 is a range of heavy off-road chassis with all-wheel drive, designed as universal carriers for large bodies and special-purpose systems. A characteristic feature is the low-set cabs on either side of the engine compartment, a powerful diesel engine and independent suspension, thanks to which the vehicle copes even with heavy terrain. The 543M version differs from the basic form in the arrangement of the cabs, which frees up a longer load area for bulky bodies. It is this quality that purpose-built variants make use of, among them mobile laboratories and medical modules deployed during the pandemic.
Leave the chassis open as long as you can, until you have the axles glued on and the wheels seated. It is practical to paint the wheels separately and fit them only after the finish is done, as on a vehicle this large they are hard to mask. Use thin modeling cement for polystyrene on the plastic, fill the seams of the body and even the surface out with a primer. Spray the base shade with an airbrush and shade the body and the cab with a light lightening of the surfaces. On this type of vehicle the weathering holds mainly on the wheels and the underside of the bed: a dark wash in the panel lines and dust pigments on the fenders and in the wheel wells.
