Two markings for the Mitsubishi A6M2: the captured machine P-5016 in Chinese colors, which American pilots tested, and a Japanese aircraft with the number 110 of June 1943. Scale 1:72.
Responsibility details are not available.
The carrier fighter A6M2 astonished with its range and agility in the first year of the war in the Pacific, and Allied intelligence officers had longed for one from the moment it appeared over China. Every captured example therefore made its way to a test airfield, where its performance was measured and weaknesses were sought that would give fighter pilots a guide to how to take it on.
The main point of interest in the set is the machine with the fuselage number P-5016 in the colors of the Chinese Air Force. Pilots of the American Volunteer Group flew it in and the record places it at Liuchow in southern China in 1943. The second variant is the aircraft with the number 110, used by the commander of the 261st Air Group of the Imperial Japanese Navy in June 1943, that is at the time of the fighting for the central Pacific islands.
An aircraft that was obtained whole or only lightly damaged was worth a whole intelligence campaign to the enemy. It could be measured in steady flight regimes and compared with their own types, and the recommendations from such tests then reached the combat units in the form of plain rules about which maneuver to choose against it and which to avoid.
The two markings place the same kit in an entirely different setting. The captured machine carried the national insignia of its new user, and it is worth studying a period photograph of them, because the finish in photographs tends to be uneven and overpainting shows through. With the Japanese variant, on the other hand, a clean base and exact placement of the tactical number are enough. Before you begin, polish the clear coat with a fine sponge, so that the thin film has nowhere to draw in air.
