1:72 Napoleonic Highlanders Standing at Ease

Napoleonic Highlanders Standing at Ease, figures 1:72 from Strelets

A set of foot figures in 1:72 scale aimed at the Scottish Highland regiments of the Napoleonic period. The soldiers stand at ease, that is, in a relaxed stance with the weapon at the foot. They are made by the firm Strelets; the castings are of soft plastic of a uniform color and are supplied unpainted and unassembled.

The real subject

The Scottish Highland regiments were among the units in the British army with their own striking uniform. The kilt, a tall cap and different accessories set them apart from the line infantry at first glance, and that is precisely why they are attractive to a modeler: in one set you get figures that cannot be overlooked in a diorama while still mixing well with the other British units of the same period.

Building and painting tips

The kilt is the main reason people buy this set, and at the same time the only genuinely demanding part of the work. In 1:72 scale do not try for a faithful tartan pattern; simplification is more convincing, that is, a dark green or dark blue base, a grid of thin dark lines over it and finally one or two fine light lines in addition. Draw the lines with a thin brush with a long tip and heavily thinned paint, which you do not needlessly apply into the folds. The rest of the figure is then easy: the red coat in thin layers over a light primer, the white crossbelts as a thin line and the cap dark. Before painting, wash the plastic with detergent and prime it; unify the finished figures with matte clear, so that the tartan does not shine after a wash.
