The item 1:35 Diorama-Base: Iraqi House belongs to the Diorama-Base range from RT-Diorama and brings the foundation of a scene with the subject of a dwelling house of the Middle Eastern type. It is an element of the setting for dioramas in 1:35 scale, not a kit of a vehicle: you add the vehicles and figures to the scene yourself.
Iraqi town and village building differs from European in its basic features. Flat roofs served as living space and as an observation point, the windows tend to be smaller because of the heat, the houses turn inward toward a courtyard and the streets between them are narrow. It was exactly these qualities that shaped the fighting in Iraqi built-up areas after 2003, where a roof meant an advantage and a narrow street a trap. The subject therefore carries strong potential for a story and at the same time clearly establishes the place of the action.
The flat roof is the most valuable part of this scene - it makes it possible to run the action on two levels and to link them with a line of sight. A vehicle in the street and figures above will create a tension a flat diorama can never achieve. It also pays to work with shadow: in harsh light the contrast between a sunlit wall and the shade of a narrow street is a striking element of a photograph in its own right. Keep the surroundings sparing, because a dusty street needs no planting at all.
