About product

Night Intruders, part I — decals in 1:72 scale (DK Decals)

This is a standalone decal set, not a kit. The sheet brings markings for British machines that during the Second World War flew night attack and harassing missions over occupied territory. The types included are the De Havilland Mosquito, the Westland Whirlwind, the Boulton Paul Defiant, the Hawker Hurricane and the Douglas Boston. The set offers schemes for ten machines, so several different models can come out of a single sheet. DK Decals is a Czech decal manufacturer that has long concentrated on thematically assembled sheets with less usual schemes.

The theme

Night attack missions, known as intruder sorties, consisted of single machines penetrating over enemy airfields and lines of communication in the dark. The aim was to attack aircraft taking off and landing, to disrupt traffic and to force the enemy to keep a constant state of readiness. Machines with long range, strong forward armament and the ability to fly at low altitude suited the task — which is why types as different as the wooden twin-engined Mosquito, the heavily armed Whirlwind, the converted Defiant, the Hurricane in its attack form and the American Boston met in one role. Most of these machines carried dark night camouflage and inconspicuous markings, which is interesting for a collector in itself.

How to work with the decals

The decals are applied over a smooth gloss base — matte clear or a rough surface will cause the area around a decal to whiten, the so-called silvering. The procedure: gloss clear, the decal in warm water for a few seconds, sliding it into place, blotting off the excess water, a decal softener on a broken-up surface and, once dry, clear again. Finally matte or semi-matte clear according to the look you want. With dark night camouflage it is especially important to work cleanly, because on a dark surface any defect around a decal shows up well.

Who the set is for

  • builders of British aircraft of the Second World War in 1:72 scale
  • modelers looking for less usual schemes outside the box options
  • anyone interested in the subject of night attack operations
  • modelers who want to build several machines from one sheet

The decals are supplied on their own. A kit, paints and clear coats are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a standalone decal sheet. The kit of the type in question has to be obtained separately.

The sheet contains markings for ten machines from the circle of British night attack units.

Yes, this item is marked as part one and the manufacturer has also published a following part with further types.

Always over smooth gloss clear, never over a matte surface. On broken-up areas a decal softener helps, and clear coat once it is dry.
