About product

Percival Vega Gull (civil service) 1:72 — Dora Wings

The kit captures the British touring and sporting aircraft Percival Vega Gull in civil service, that is with the fit and the markings typical of private owners and racing crews of the prewar years. It is an injection-molded plastic model in 1:72 scale; besides the parts for the body and the flying surfaces, the package holds clear parts for the cabin glazing and a decal sheet. Dora Wings is a Ukrainian maker focused on aircraft of the interwar era, which other companies as a rule do not tool.

The real subject

The Vega Gull was a single-engined cantilever low-wing monoplane of mostly wooden construction with a covering of plywood and fabric. It first flew in the autumn of 1935 and followed on from the smaller three-seat Gull type. The enclosed cabin took a pilot and three passengers, the wings could be folded back for storage in a hangar and the landing gear was fixed, with a tail wheel. Power came from an inverted inline six-cylinder de Havilland Gipsy Six. The combination of clean shapes, a decent speed and a long range made the Vega Gull a popular machine for the long-distance and record flights of the second half of the 1930s and an entrant in prestigious British races. The type became the direct design predecessor of the later Percival Proctor.

Building and painting tips

The model is short-run in character, so it pays to dry-fit the parts first and to level the mating surfaces if necessary. Glue with liquid cement for polystyrene, which runs into the joint by capillary action and leaves no excess. The cabin glazing is a prominent feature on this type — mask the frames and spray in thin coats so that no paint runs under the mask. Coat the area with a gloss clear coat before applying the decals and seal it with a matte one once it has dried. Civil schemes tend to be smooth and glossy, so keep the patina very restrained, really just a fine accenting of the engraved lines.

FAQ

In the contents of the decal sheet and in the finish schemes. The civil boxing covers machines in the colors of private owners and racing crews, while the military boxing covers aircraft taken into armed service.

Rather not. It is a short-run model where you have to allow for fitting the parts and preparing the seams carefully. A modeler with experience of ordinary mass-produced kits will manage it without trouble.

It was a mostly wooden structure with a covering of plywood and fabric, with fixed landing gear with a tail wheel and folding wings.

They are not. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; paints, glue and any accessories have to be obtained separately.
