A printed sheet in 1:72 scale with the pattern listed under the name Pine Tree, in a transparent version. It is used to cover areas of an aircraft model with a repeating pattern that is hard to paint by hand.

This printed sheet in 1:72 scale carries the pattern listed under the name Pine Tree. The qualifier Transparent says that the version is transparent, so the shade of the base it goes onto also plays a part in the final impression.
A repeating pattern is slow to paint on a model and rarely comes out the same across the whole area. A printed sheet gets around that work: the area is covered all at once and the grain stays comparable everywhere. The sheet is cut into pieces to suit the shape of the areas they are to go on, with a small overlap at the edges.
With decal sheets the wet method is the usual one. Dip the cut-out piece in lukewarm water for a few seconds and let it rest until it can be moved on the backing. Lay it on a glossy, degreased surface, squeeze the water out with a soft cloth and let it dry. On broken-up areas a softener helps, drawing the decal toward the engraved lines. Before you soak the sheet, check in the instructions whether the version is self-adhesive; a soaked self-adhesive film is ruined.
Prepare the base light and smooth, because a transparent print will hide neither irregularities nor dark spots. Once dry, go over the area with a coat that blends the edges of the sheet into its surroundings and protects the print during further work. Check the edges once dry and prick any bubbles with the tip of a sharp blade. The package holds only the sheet; the model, the paints, the varnish, the glue and the softener are not included, unless stated otherwise.
