A set of die-cut self-adhesive vinyl masks in 1:72 scale intended for spraying British code letters. The letters are cut on the sheet in a single size corresponding to a real height of 24 inches, which in 1:72 scale works out at 8.467 mm. The marking is not applied like a decal but sprayed: the mask is stuck on the finish, oversprayed, and once it is lifted off the letter stays sharply bounded directly in the paint, without the glossy edge of a carrier film.
Code letters are among the most conspicuous features of British aircraft. They were carried on both sides of the fuselage and usually consisted of a two-letter unit code and a separate letter for the individual machine, divided by the roundel. The prescribed height of the letters changed over the years and according to the type of aircraft, which is why the maker offers the individual sizes separately; this set covers the 24-inch variant, that is 8.467 mm on the model. The codes were sprayed in light shades, most often in Sky, and in later schemes also in gray, so it is a good idea to check the period-correct color for the particular machine.
The model has to be smoothly sprayed, degreased and fully cured before masking. Lift the masks off the sheet with tweezers, lay them in place and press the edges down thoroughly, so that no paint runs under the film. Work in layers from the lighter color to the darker one and let each of them dry properly; apply the paint thinly, because a heavy coat leaves a ridge at the edge. Lift the mask off shortly after it has dried, pulling sideways at an angle. A gloss base limits paint creeping under better than a rough matte surface and makes sharp edges on the finished marking easier.
