A set of photo-etched metal parts in 1:72 scale from the Polish maker Aber. It is not a kit of a vehicle but a detail accessory that on a model of the German Sturmgeschütz III assault gun will replace the plastic side screens, the so-called Schürzen, hangers and mounting rails included. The etched sheet has a thickness that injection-molded plastic will never reach, so the screens look like thin steel plates rather than thick boards.
The side screens appeared on German tracked vehicles in 1943 as protection for the sides of the hull against anti-tank rifles and shaped-charge ammunition. They were hung on lengthwise mounting rails above the running gear and in the field they commonly bent, tore or went missing altogether. The early mounting differs from the later one in the design of the hanger and in the shape of the plates — which is exactly why the maker offers both variants as separate sets.
Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard mat and never break them out by twisting. A photo-etch bending tool or two steel rulers will handle the bends. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue; on larger areas two-part epoxy holds better. Degrease the metal before painting and lay down a base coat intended for metals, and only then acrylic or enamel. The great advantage of metal is that the screens can be realistically bent, dented or left out altogether — and it is exactly that untidiness that makes a model believable.
This is a detail accessory, not a complete model. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package.
