A plastic figure set of Spartan hoplites in 1:72 scale from the Russian manufacturer Zvezda. The package holds 41 figures in twelve poses, about 24 mm tall, in fairly hard plastic, unpainted and with no decals. The box places the set in the fifth to the fourth century BC.
Sparta was the only Greek state whose citizens devoted their whole lives to military service, and its hoplites were therefore held to be the best infantry of the Hellenic world. They fought in the phalanx: a closed rank of men with the large round aspis shield, the dory spear and a short sword, protected by a bronze helmet and greaves. On their shields they carried the Lacedaemonian lambda and over their armor a red cloak. The phalanx won through pressure and the cohesion of the rank, not through individual thrusts.
Most of the work is on the shields, because they are the most visible thing on the figure. It pays to spray them separately and to finish the lambda with a brush or with a decal from another maker. The bronze comes out well when it is applied over a dark base and then darkened gently with a wash. The red cloak covers better if an orange or brown toning shade goes underneath it.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
