About product

Kovozavody Prostejov 1:72 Spitfire Mk.Ia Three Blade Prop

An injection-molded kit of the legendary British fighter in 1:72 scale from the Czech maker in Prostejov. This boxing focuses on machines with a three-blade propeller, which is an important distinguishing feature on the early Mk.I. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The Spitfire Mk.I was the first production version of the type and went through a number of changes during its service that can be seen clearly on the model. The most visible of them concerns the propeller. The first machines flew with a two-blade wooden propeller with fixed-pitch blades, which was simple but could not use the power of the engine across the whole speed range. It was replaced by a three-blade metal propeller with variable-pitch blades and later by a constant-speed propeller. The difference showed above all on takeoff and in the climb. The Mk.Ia subversion carried an armament of eight 7.7 mm machine guns spread through the wings, was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engine, and you can tell it from the later versions by the shape of the cowling, the exhausts and the low canopy. Machines in exactly this configuration formed the backbone of the British fighter defense in the summer of 1940.

Building and painting tips

Short-run kits of this kind need more preparation than mainstream plastic. Test-fit the parts dry, sand the mating surfaces if needed and glue with a slower cement that gives you time to line things up. Finish the cockpit before you close the fuselage. Mask the canopy and glue it on only after the camouflage has been sprayed. Go over the surface with gloss varnish before the decals and even it out with matte varnish once it is dry. Leave the propeller until last and check in advance which version your machine will carry.
