The model is an undemanding way to build this type, and it also works as a second kit on which to try out a new painting technique. The Spitfire Mk.V was the most numerously built version of the British fighter. It was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine of the 45 series, and the Mk.Vb variant carried two 20 mm cannon in the wing supplemented by four machine guns. The tropical form is recognizable at a glance: under the nose there is a bulky air filter fairing, which protected the engine from taking in sand and dust. Machines modified in this way served above all in the Mediterranean and in North Africa. The filter worsened the aerodynamics but considerably extended the life of the engine in conditions the original design was not built for.
What shows most on a small Spitfire is the shape of the trailing edges: carefully thin the wing and tail surfaces from behind by sanding, and the model gains a scale look at once. Finish and varnish the cockpit before you glue the fuselage halves together. Mask the clear canopy with strips of masking tape or with a ready-made mask; hand-painting the frames in this scale tends to show. Seat the characteristic filter fairing under the nose carefully so that it sits on the center line, as it is the dominant feature of the whole model. Apply gloss varnish before the decals and unify the surface with matte varnish once they are dry.
