A kit of the Soviet experimental SU-18 light self-propelled gun in 1:72 scale from Armory. A subject from the interwar period that never reached series production.
Responsibility details are not available.
The model captures the SU-18, a Soviet attempt at a light self-propelled gun from the period before the Second World War. It is a typical subject for modelers who enjoy the so-called dead ends of development: machines built in single figures or left on paper, which practically never appear in the usual kit range. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
At the turn of the 1920s and 1930s Soviet design bureaus were looking for a way to bring artillery support directly to advancing infantry. One solution was to set an open superstructure with a gun of larger caliber than a small rotating turret could bear onto an existing light tank chassis. The SU-18 grew out of precisely that idea and built on the components of a light tank of the day. It never reached series production and remained at the trials stage.
On self-propelled guns the open fighting superstructure is both the most interesting and the most demanding part: you can see into it, so paint and weather the inside before you close it up and fit the gun. Try the barrel dry and check that it points straight; on small models a crookedly seated barrel is the most conspicuous mistake. Assemble and paint the running gear separately from the hull. Finally add dust and mud with pigments on the lower areas and a faint wash into the riveted joints.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
