About product

Masking set for the Su-39, 1:72 scale

This item is a masking set, not a kit and not decals. It comes from the Czech manufacturer Eduard and falls within its range of masks for 1:72 scale. The masks are die-cut in advance, so they are simply lifted off the sheet and applied in place. The material is kabuki paper: thin, pliable, with an adhesive weak enough to leave no trace and not to pull a sprayed coat off when it is removed.

The real subject

Su-39 is the designation of a modernized attack aircraft derived from the twin-engine Su-25. It is a subsonic machine for the support of ground troops, in which the pilot's cabin is protected by an armored tub. The glazing is therefore smaller and the frames heavier than on fighter types, which paradoxically does not make the work on a model easier: shorter, broken-up areas are harder to mask by hand than one large smooth canopy.

Usage tips

Wash the clear parts first and let them dry completely, as grease from the fingers is the most common reason a mask does not hold. Lift the pieces with tweezers and press them down with the tip of a toothpick around the whole edge, especially in the corners of the frames. Before you start spraying the outer color, lay a thin sealing coat, ideally in the color the frame has on the inside. Guide the airbrush perpendicular to the edge of the mask, not at an angle under it. Once the painting and the varnish are done, remove the masks by pulling them back over themselves rather than straight up, so that the edge does not lift with the paint. Any adhesive residue left behind comes off with a cotton bud moistened with water.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building modern attack aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Those who airbrush multi-color camouflage and need the glazing perfectly covered
  • Modelers for whom trimming tape by hand on small frames takes a long time
  • Anyone who wants the canopy frames equally wide along their whole length

The set contains masking templates. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A sheet with pre-cut self-adhesive masks. The aircraft kit and the paints are not included.

Tape has to be trimmed by hand on the model, and on narrow frames the result is uneven. A die-cut mask has the right shape straight away.

By pulling it back over itself, not straight up. A perpendicular pull easily lifts the edge of the sprayed coat.

Yes, kabuki paper takes a base coat, the paint and the varnish. What matters is pressing the mask down firmly around its whole edge before spraying.
