A plastic kit of the Transall C-160 tactical transport airplane in 1:72 scale from the French maker Heller. It is supplied as a set of injected plastic parts with a decal sheet. The real subject has a span of forty meters, so the finished model measures roughly fifty-five centimeters across the wings and is among the larger pieces for a display case, which is worth counting on when planning the space and choosing a base.
The C-160 came about in the 1960s within the French and German consortium Transporter Allianz, from whose name the airplane's own name is derived. It is a high-wing airplane with a pair of Rolls-Royce Tyne turboprops, a rear loading ramp and landing gear adapted for operation from grass and unpaved surfaces. It carried troops, vehicles and palletized cargo, it was used for airdrops of paratroops and supplies and in later years for humanitarian and evacuation flights as well. Besides the French Air Force and the Luftwaffe it was operated by other air forces too, among them the Turkish and the South African. It lasted several decades in service before more modern types replaced it.
With a large transport airplane it pays to start from the cockpit and the cargo compartment and to try at once how much weight is needed in the nose so that the model does not sit down on its tail. The joints of the fuselage halves and of the leading edges are best filled, sanded down and the engraved lines restored. Glue the engine nacelles, propellers and antennas on only after the camouflage has been sprayed, as masking is then easier. European schemes tended to be a combination of dark green and gray, while sand shades appeared on machines committed outside Europe. Apply the decals onto a gloss base and finish the whole model with a matte varnish.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
