Vickers Colt Built 1:72 (GasPatch models)

A resin accessory in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer GasPatch models. It is not a model of an aircraft but a set of castings of the Vickers machine gun in the form from the license production of the Colt company. According to the name the package contains two pieces, which will also suit a twin installation ahead of the cockpit. The parts are fitted into another model in place of coarser plastic parts.

The real subject

The Vickers was a British machine gun of 7.7 mm caliber, water-cooled in ground service. The aviation form had air cooling and a barrel jacket provided with holes or slots so that the airflow carried the heat away. On single-seat aircraft of the First World War period the machine gun was mounted fixed ahead of the cockpit. During the war it was also built under license outside Britain to cover the demand, among other places in the United States by the Colt company.

Building and painting tips

The key to a good result is the fit. Before you reach for the glue, try the part dry on the model and compare its position relative to the fuselage and to the other piece. After removing the casting block, level the seating surface on abrasive paper laid on glass or on a flat board, otherwise the part will stay crooked and it is immediately visible on the finished model. Fill any gap that remains after seating with a thicker cyanoacrylate glue, which can be sanded flat once cured. On a twin installation, make sure that both barrels point parallel, as the eye picks asymmetry up very quickly.
