Garbage bins are among the features that turn a model of a street into an inhabited place. They work at the entrances of houses, in passageways, at the back of shops, in courtyards and in the surroundings of a station. It pays not to set them in a row but to place them irregularly and turn or tilt some of them, or lay one on its side. It is exactly the small imperfection that makes a scene believable.
Pick the small parts up with tweezers and work over a tray with a raised edge. They glue with super glue applied with a pin, and on an absorbent surface PVA glue will serve too. Deal with the painting before fitting: primer, then the shade itself and finally bringing the edges up with a dry brush so that the shape stands out. Suggest rust and dirt with a dark wash and pigments, or with fine spots. If you want to go further, you can bend the top rim of the bin slightly and suggest the contents with a piece of foam repainted dark.
