1:48 Mitsubishi Ki-46-III Dinah National Insignia is a set of national insignia masks for models of the Japanese Ki-46-III reconnaissance aircraft in 1:48 scale. The markings are sprayed in paint instead of applied as a decal.

An accessory from the Dead Design brand in 1:48 scale. It is not an aircraft kit but masks with which the national insignia are sprayed straight into the finish of the model. The extent of the set is stated on its box.
The Japanese national marking is a solid disc, and a circle is the shape on which work by hand loses out fastest. The eye is exceptionally sensitive to deviations from a true circle, so even a minimal flattening of the perimeter is visible at first glance. The mask is cut by machine, so the shape is regular and the same in every position. Cutting a circle into masking tape by hand with a compass cutter does exist, but at diameters of a few millimeters it is unreliable.
A decal holds the circle accurately but pays for it with a carrier film. On the matte finish of a reconnaissance aircraft that creates a glossy outline, and when adhesion is imperfect it silvers, especially where it lies across an engraved line or a row of rivets. A sprayed marking has no such edge and crosses panel lines without trouble.
The Ki-46 is often built in a bare metal or light finish, and there every imperfection of the line shows twice over. Let the base cure, therefore, and degrease the surface. The red shade needs a light base, otherwise over a metal finish it comes out brownish. Spray thinly and at right angles, and take the mask off while the paint has only set.
