An injection-molded plastic kit of the Panhard 178B armored car in 1:35 scale from Special Armour. It is the model with the so-called late turret armed with a 47mm gun, that is the form that differs from the early one above all in the turret and the armament. The kit belongs to the short-run category: the parts typically have finer but more delicate engraving, and the fit deserves a trial assembly dry. The contents of the package and the choice of markings are given in the instructions enclosed with the kit.
The Panhard 178 was a French all-wheel-drive armored car developed as a reconnaissance vehicle for cavalry units. In design it was a four-wheeled vehicle with an armored hull and a rotating turret; a characteristic feature of the family was a driving position at both ends of the vehicle. The designation 178B is used for the later form with a different turret and heavier armament in the shape of a 47mm gun. Vehicles of this family served with the French army after the Second World War as well, when they mainly carried out reconnaissance and patrol duties.
Start with a dry trial of the hull and the turret: with short-run kits it pays to adjust the fit before the glue comes into play. Finish and paint the wheels and the chassis before you close the lower part up, as you will not reach them later. Use a liquid cement on the plastic, applied into the seam with a small brush, sand the joints back once dry and restore the engraving. Apply a primer before painting, which will also reveal unfinished joints. Spray the base coat with an airbrush in thin layers, apply the decals over a gloss surface and use a decal softener. At the end come washes into the recesses and pigments for mud and dust effects, which on a wheeled vehicle do most of their work on the fenders and around the wheels.
