Decals with period French commercial and advertising graphics in 1:35 scale. The accessory is aimed at the facades of houses in a diorama: at the signs of small shops, at advertisements painted across a whole wall, at the boards beside an entrance. In itself it is neither a model nor a kit but a surface treatment that an already built house receives.
Lettering on a wall is the fastest way to place the viewer somewhere specific. French commercial graphics have a handwriting of their own, a different typeface and a different layout from Anglo-Saxon or German advertising, and a single well-placed board therefore puts a scene in western Europe before the viewer has had time to look at the equipment. The set suits both urban and village subjects where a dwelling house with a ground-floor business stands, and it also works well on a partly damaged wall where only a fragment of an advertisement is left.
A decal needs a smooth and glossy base, otherwise air gets trapped under its film and the lettering silvers. Go over a matte-painted wall with a gloss coat where the lettering is to go, seat the decal in a pool of water, draw it down and let it dry undisturbed. Plaster tends to be textured, so it pays to use a decal softener, which pulls the decal into the texture and takes away its look of stuck-on film. Finally matte the surface and go over the lettering with a thin layer of dust or a wash. A faded, partly worn advertisement is more convincing than fresh printing.
An accessory for building dioramas, not a kit. The building, the gloss coat and a decal softener are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
