The elements of both cockpits are printed three-dimensionally and painted ready on decal paper. The instrument panels, side consoles and controls have a noticeable relief and a legible drawing, so in a large scale they replace many hours of handwork with a brush. The set is an accessory for a plastic kit in 1:32 scale, not a model of the aircraft. The exact extent of the set is given on the packaging. Dimensionally it is based on the Tamiya kit.
The Phantom II is a two-seat twin-engined jet combat aircraft with the stations of the pilot and the operator arranged in tandem. The F-4D form follows on from the older version for the US Air Force and differs from it above all in its equipment, which shows in the arrangement of the panels in the cockpit as well. The sets for the individual forms are therefore separate, and a separate item exists for the earlier F-4C version. In 1:32 scale the cockpit under the large glazing is exceptionally exposed.
Smooth the surfaces under the elements, degrease them and cover them with gloss varnish, because an element will not hold on matte paint. Cut with a new scalpel blade close to the outline, as in a large scale every inaccuracy shows. Lay the panels down with tweezers, from one edge and pressing gradually, so that no air is closed in beneath them. Soak the sheet briefly in lukewarm water and slide the element off the carrier paper. A decal softener and a setting solution do not belong here, as their chemistry would attack the printed resin. Finish the cockpit and try it dry before you close the fuselage up. At the end take the sheen off the surrounding surfaces and leave the gloss only on the instrument glass.
