Moscow infantry (ratniki), 16th century, 1st set, 1:72 is a set of Red Box figures for mass scenes from Eastern Europe.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of figures in 1:72 scale from the maker Red Box. The term in parentheses is the period designation for the foot fighters of the Muscovite state; the set therefore does not cover a specialized type of unit but the ordinary foot element that makes up the bulk in a scene. It is set number one of the given line, so it suits as a starting package to which the further sets are added.
The foot elements of the Muscovite state in the 16th century. The dress followed from the ordinary clothing of Eastern Europe at the time: a long outer coat, a belt, a soft or fur-trimmed head covering. The armament was predominantly melee weapons and polearms, the protection of the body partial and not uniform. No uniform pattern of dress existed at this time.
A set of this type is bought for the number, not for the individual figure, and that is precisely where mistakes are most often made in 1:72. The impression of a throng is not made by the quantity of figures but by overlap: as soon as the figures are set into two discontinuous layers of depth so that the rear rank is between the heads of the front one, the eye adds up even what is not there. A level grid of equally spaced figures, on the contrary, looks empty even with a large number. Subordinate the painting to that: work the front group up with more contrast and keep the rear one in a more subdued tone and without sharp transitions. This procedure saves time and at the same time gives the scene the depth that cannot be created by detail in a small scale.
The figures are supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
