About product

F/A-18D Hornet, a 3D full-color instrument panel 1:32, displays off (Kits-World)

A full-color decal with a three-dimensional layer from the maker Kits-World, intended for the instrument panel of the cockpit of a Hornet kit in 1:32 scale. This variant has the multifunction displays printed as dark, inactive areas, so it corresponds to an aircraft without power, as you see it on the apron or in a hangar. The relief of the layer gives the frames of the displays and the surrounding instruments a three-dimensional look that is achieved only with difficulty with a brush.

The real subject

The F/A-18D is the two-seat version of the multirole carrier aircraft Hornet. The cockpit belongs to the early generation of what are called glass cockpits: most of the area is taken up by rectangular multifunction displays, around which there is only a limited number of classic gauges. That is precisely why the sharpness of the printing of the displays decides the result; on a model in 1:32 the display area is large enough for everyone to notice it.

Application tips

Sand the panel on the kit smooth and spray it with a dark paint; the structure of the plastic will then not show through under the decal. A gloss varnish on the base will reduce silvering. Seat the layer with a minimum of water, draw the excess off and let it settle by pressure from a soft cloth, not by rubbing. Use the softener only drop by drop and let it work, as the three-dimensional layer is easily damaged by being brushed over. Leave the displays glossy and lead the matte varnish only around the panel. If you are building the cockpit open, it pays off to finish the panel before you glue the fuselage, because with a finished cockpit the space is hard to reach into.

Who the set is for

  • for modelers who build the Hornet in 1:32 with an open canopy
  • for showing an aircraft on the ground with the systems off
  • for a clean rendering of the displays without painting with a brush
  • as a quick alternative to photo-etched and resin sets

The maker also makes a variant with active displays and further very similar sets for the same aircraft; choose according to the exact designation. This is an accessory for a kit, not a model on its own; a kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

In the printing of the display areas. Displays that are off are dark and correspond to an aircraft without power, while active ones have the symbology rendered.

We recommend sanding it smooth. Cast raised gauges would create bumps under the three-dimensional layer.

Yes, but only in a small amount and without brushing it over. A relief layer is damaged more easily than a classic thin decal.
