About product

F-14A Tomcat, a 3D full-color instrument panel 1:32, displays off (Kits-World)

A full-color set with a three-dimensional layer from the maker Kits-World for the cockpit of a Tomcat kit in 1:32 scale. The displays are printed as inactive, that is dark, which corresponds to an aircraft parked on a deck or on the apron. The instrument panel of the Tomcat is densely occupied by round gauges and it is precisely with these that a relief decal pays off most: every dial has sharp printing and a visible frame.

The real subject

The F-14A is a two-seat carrier-based fighter aircraft with a variable-geometry wing and a tandem arrangement of the crew, where a weapon systems officer works beside the pilot. The front cockpit of the early A version is for the most part analog: round instruments dominate it, complemented by a few displays. In the large 1:32 scale this difference from the later modernized cockpits is clearly apparent.

Application tips

Sand the cast gauges off the part, otherwise the layer will not lie flat. Spray the base with a dark paint and varnish it with a gloss varnish. Seat the set with a minimum of water and let it settle by pressure from a soft cloth; by sliding it over the gloss varnish the relief is easily rubbed off. Dose the softener drop by drop. With a densely occupied panel it pays off to work in parts and let each one dry well before you reach for the next. Leave the glasses of the instruments glossy and apply the matte varnish only to the surroundings. The space of the cockpit comes across more convincingly when you add a fine dark wash into the corners around the panel.

Who the set is for

  • for builders of the Tomcat in 1:32 with an open cockpit
  • for modelers who do not want to paint dozens of small gauges
  • for showing an aircraft with the systems off
  • as a quick alternative to photo-etched and resin sets

Several very similar sets exist for the same aircraft, which differ in the variant of the displays as well as in the scale; choose according to the exact designation. This is an accessory for a kit, not a model on its own; a kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Not well. Sand the raised details smooth first, so that the relief layer seats over the whole area without bumps and bubbles.

It corresponds to an aircraft without power. Choose it when you are building a model parked on the ramp or on a deck with an empty cockpit.

It is not. If you do use it, dose it drop by drop and let it act; the relief layer is damaged by brushing over it.

According to the name it is the A version. The later modernized cockpits differ, so we do not recommend the set for other versions automatically.
