Relief color decals for the instrument panel of the American P-51D fighter in 1:48 scale. The set takes the place of painting the dials by hand and gives the cockpit depth, because the decal has a thickness of its own. It is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model.
The P-51D is the most widespread version of the American single-seat North American P-51 Mustang fighter, recognizable by its bubble canopy and its cut-down rear fuselage. It is precisely because of that canopy that the cockpit on a model is unusually exposed and the instrument panel is visible from most angles, so detail there is worth the effort.
A relief decal differs from a flat one in having a thickness of its own. The base therefore has to be smooth and gloss, otherwise air will be trapped under the decal and the surface will silver. Cut the decal as close as you can, release it in lukewarm water and seat it on its target surface without needless sliding. Apply the softener drop by drop along the edges and let it work by itself, leaving the decal undisturbed for at least 45 minutes; do not run a brush over the relief, or the raised details will be squashed or torn off. When it is dry, go over the surroundings with matte varnish and leave the dials themselves gloss, so that they read as glass.
The manufacturer makes several instrument panel sets for the P-51D in this scale and their names differ only slightly from one another. Check the exact designation of the particular set in advance, so that you get the one your model needs.
