About product

Spitfire Mk.I, Mk.II and Mk.V Color 3D Instrument Panel 1:48

A color three-dimensional decal of the instrument panel for models of the early Supermarine Spitfire versions in 1:48 scale from Kits-World. It is neither a photo-etched nor a resin part: the motif is printed on a decal sheet and has a relief of its own, so the dials, bezels and controls stand up above the surface and read as a molded detail once they are transferred to the model. The modeler gets a legible instrument panel without painting the individual gauges by hand and without photo-etched layers that have to be stacked on top of each other.

Where the motif belongs and where it does not

With decal sheets there is always the question of choosing and placing the motif. A personal emblem or nose art can be shifted a little forward or back along the fuselage to taste, but an instrument panel has no such freedom: it has one correct place, the front face of the cockpit tub under the canopy. That is exactly why it pays to try the fit dry first and only then wet the sheet. On a Spitfire the cockpit opening is narrow and the panel is seen mainly from above and obliquely from the front, so a shift of a tenth of a millimeter or a tilt will show on a finished model.

Application step by step

Spray the base with gloss paint or gloss varnish; on a matte surface air stays under the decal and silvering appears. Cut the motif out close to the edge of the printing, dip it in lukewarm water for a few seconds and let it rest until it will slide off the paper. Because of the relief, dose the softener drop by drop along the edges and never run a brush over the surface, since the pressure of the bristles would deform the raised print. The raised plastic of the original kit panel is usually better sanded flat first. Apply the final matte varnish only to the surrounding areas and leave the dials gloss.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of early Spitfire versions who want a legible cockpit without painting gauges
  • Modelers who do not get on with stacking photo-etched layers
  • Anyone building a model with the canopy open

This is an accessory, not a kit. The aircraft model, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a decal with relief: it is transferred from water onto the base and no glue is used.

Yes, but carefully and drop by drop along the edges. A relief print must not be brushed over, or it will be deformed.

You do not have to remove it, but it is a good idea to sand the raised details flat so that the decal seats without bubbles.

The name gives the early Mk.I, Mk.II and Mk.V versions. The manufacturer makes other sheets for the later versions; tell them apart by the exact designation.
