A laid surface instead of a permanent base

The other bases in this range mostly tie a scene to one airfield and one window of time. Here the logic is different. Steel planking was a portable solution: it was laid where there was no paved surface, and from that follows its typical setting at field and temporary airfields rather than at permanent bases with a concrete runway. The base therefore binds you neither by address nor by year but by a kind of place. Take that as your starting point when building the scene: planking suits a machine in field conditions rather than an aircraft on a prepared parking area.

What to bear in mind when building

• The panels have a pronounced regular grid and perforation; turn the model so that its axis is not parallel with the joints.
• The large 675 x 675 mm format gives room for one model in 1:48 scale and accessories around it.
• Planking was laid onto the ground, so a dusty or muddy underside suits it; a uniformly clean machine looks out of keeping on this surface.
• The placing in time is carried solely by the model; the name of the base gives no period.
