About product

Display Base for a 1:72 Model, the Eighth Air Force, England 1942 to 1945 (Kits-World)

A printed scenic base 450 x 450 mm for models in 1:72 scale. The motif is tied to the surfaces of the American Eighth Air Force stationed in England in the years 1942 to 1945. It is neither a kit nor a decal but a large-format sheet on which a finished model is stood. In this scale the 450 x 450 mm size will take a single-engine machine without trouble; with large four-engine bombers, expect the base to serve rather as a section of surface under part of the aircraft than as a scene around the whole machine.

What the motif captures

The span of years 1942 to 1945 covers the whole period in which these units operated on British soil. The motif is therefore usable under a wide range of American machines from this period, from escort fighters to bomber hardware. Given the sensitivity of the subject, we describe only what is in the designation: the place, the period and the allegiance of the surface.

Wear and the realism of the surface

Period airfields of this kind had paved surfaces adjoining untreated ground, and the transition between them was the dirtiest place on the whole station. Aircraft wheels carried soil onto the paving there and conversely pressed ruts into the soft ground. For a model there follows a simple guide: dirt belongs from the bottom upward and from the wheels inward, not evenly over the whole surface. The tires, the landing gear forks and the underside of the fuselage will take an earthy deposit, while the upper surfaces stay markedly cleaner, with only a faded shade from the weather. This difference between a dirty underside and a faded top is the most characteristic thing about period hardware and it stands out on a printed base.

Who the base is for

  • Builders of American Second World War hardware in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want to set a model in a particular place and period
  • Those after a quick scene without building a diorama
  • Photography and display-case presentation of finished models

This is a printed scenic base, not a kit. The model and the accessories are not part of the delivery.

FAQ

In 1:72 scale not the whole of it. With large machines an area of 450 x 450 mm will serve as a section under part of the aircraft. Under a single-engine machine there is plenty of room.

The years 1942 to 1945, that is the whole period in which these units operated on British soil.

On period hardware the dirt belongs mainly on the wheels, the landing gear and the underside of the fuselage. The upper surfaces stay cleaner, only faded by the weather.
