In 1:48 scale the airborne helmet is a casting only a few millimeters across, and yet the set offers five pieces with a net and five with a net and camouflage foliage. That is amply enough for a small group by a glider or on board an aircraft.
Without a projecting brim, with a deep shell drawn down over the ears and with a firm fastening under the chin, it was meant to stay where it belonged during the jump and a hard landing. The British introduced it after the experience of the first airborne operations, and from the early 1940s we meet it in practically all the larger operations into which British and Polish airborne units were committed. The camouflage net was commonly stretched over the shell and soldiers stuck pieces of burlap or local greenery into it.
At this size layering stops working and contrast starts to decide. Choose a base a shade darker than reality would call for and work with light only from above. The texture of the netting will speak for itself when you go over it with an almost dry brush. Line the parts up on double-sided tape beforehand, as otherwise the small pieces get lost among the tools.
