Name plates in the shorter version, placed on the front edge of a base, on a plinth or on a display surface under a model. They serve to label a model with a caption, typically the name of the real subject, the scale or the designation of the tableau. This is not a display base in the usual sense but a presentation accessory that turns finished work into a complete display item.

What it is suited to

A caption changes the way a model reads. In a display case with several pieces, a visitor without a label is left guessing what they are looking at; with one they get the context at once. At competitions and club shows, labeling a model is practically standard and decides whether the judges or a viewer will connect the model with the right type and scale. The shorter variant suits a brief description, the name of the type alone or a short designation. Longer captions, where more lines or a whole sentence are needed, are covered by the longer version in the same range, which the manufacturer makes separately.

Working with a name plate

Before gluing, lay the caption on the base dry and step back; the plate has to be legible from viewing distance but must not pull the composition onto itself. It proves best to place it on the front edge slightly away from the corner rather than exactly in the middle of the edge, if the model is turned at an angle. The surface under the name plate has to be flat and degreased. The choice of glue depends on the material of both the name plate and the base, so choose it only according to the actual version and try it first in a place that does not show.
