A texturing rolling pin with a relief pattern in a mystical, arcane treatment. It is neither a toy nor a finished accessory but a tool: the pattern is impressed with it into rolled-out modeling compound and the result is the surface of a base, a floor or a terrain piece. With one rolling pin you can make any amount of the same surface, so it suits anywhere the look of a whole unit of figures or of a larger piece of gaming terrain has to be unified.
Roll the compound, whether modeling putty, air-drying clay or polymer compound, out on a flat surface to an even thickness. Before impressing, lightly dampen or dust both the surface of the compound and the rolling pin, so that the material does not stick; without that the impression tears. Guide the rolling pin in one smooth movement and with even pressure, because going back and over the same place smudges the pattern. From the impressed sheet then cut out the shape of the base or the piece and let the compound cure according to its type. A dry surface is painted like any other: a base shade, a dark wash into the recesses and a dry brush on the raised parts, which draws the relief out. With a pattern on this theme it pays to choose one color for the highlighted lines and keep to it across the whole set.
After use, clean the remains of compound off the rolling pin before they dry; once dry they are considerably harder to clean off and clogged relief loses its sharpness. Store it so that no other tool lies on the working surface. The manufacturer makes the same range with a whole scale of further patterns, from paving and bricks to fantasy motifs.
