A plastic kit of the German shipborne rotor kite Focke-Achgelis Fa 330 Bachstelze in the unusually large 1:16 scale from Takom. The package holds photo-etched parts for the fine detail, decals for several options and a pilot figure. The large scale makes it possible to capture the slender tube frame and the three-blade rotor faithfully.
The Fa 330 Bachstelze, meaning wagtail, was a single-seat unpowered rotor kite that served German submarines as an airborne observation post during the Second World War. Launched from the deck of a surfaced submarine, it spun up as the boat ran into wind and climbed on a cable to an altitude of up to around 120 meters, from where the observer could see much farther than from the submarine's bridge. It was used mainly in the Indian Ocean, and only the oncoming air served to spin the rotor up; the machine had no engine.
Given the slender structure, take care over a clean joint on the tube frame fuselage and over the accurate balance of the rotor blades. Glue the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). It is worth treating the observer figure supplied as part of a small scene; the large scale will reward careful shading of the uniform and the face.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
