About product

Miles M.5 Sparrowhawk, King's Cup, a 1:72 Kit from SBS Model

A short-run kit of a British single-seat sporting and racing aircraft in 1:72 scale. The box is presented on the theme of the British King's Cup, that is the world of the interwar speed races around which British civil flying in the 1930s largely turned. This is a typical subject for a small brand: a diminutive machine that the large manufacturers do not put into production.

The real subject

The Sparrowhawk belonged to the family of light aircraft from the British firm Miles of the mid-1930s. It was a single-seat low-wing monoplane with fixed landing gear and a wooden structure, adapted for speed flying: against its training and touring relatives it had a narrower fuselage and cleaner aerodynamic shapes, because the point of the design was speed, not payload. Machines in this category started in civil races and wore conspicuous private color schemes, which is an advantage for a model, since the result is colorful even without a complicated camouflage.

Building and painting tips

With a short-run set it pays to go slowly. Put the parts together dry first and only then glue them; with short runs it always pays to check the joints before the glue goes on. Choose the glue according to the material of the parts in the package: a thin plastic cement for injection-molded plastic, cyanoacrylate for resin and metal pieces. Unify the surface with a primer, otherwise the differences between the materials will show through the paint. Racing schemes tend to be glossy, so it pays to spray thin coats, to lay the decals on a gloss base and to finish the whole thing with a uniform clear coat.

Who the model is for

  • for collectors of interwar racing and record-breaking aircraft
  • for modelers who want something in 1:72 that the next person does not have in his display case
  • for more experienced builders, because short-run sets call for more work than a mainstream kit
  • for lovers of striking civil color schemes without camouflage

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Rather not. Short-run kits tend to have fewer locating features and call for dry fitting, sanding and patience. For a second or third model in order, though, it is a manageable step.

Short-run sets tend to be mixed, that is injection-molded plastic completed with resin and metal. Once the box is open, choose the glue according to the material: plastic cement for injection-molded plastic, cyanoacrylate for resin and metal.

The box is presented on the King's Cup theme. What is stated on the box decides.
