The Avia S-199 was the first fighter of the reconstituted Czechoslovak Air Force after the Second World War. It came about from the airframe of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 G, into which a Junkers Jumo 211 from bomber production was fitted for want of the original engines. A different powerplant and a broad-bladed propeller worsened the handling on takeoff and landing, and the machine earned the reputation of a demanding aircraft. The type also flew in service abroad and is a favorite subject among Czech modelers.
