A set of masking shapes from the SX-Art brand prepared for a model of the Sherman VC Firefly tank in 1:35. It is not a kit, nor parts of a model, but an add-on for painting: precisely cut masks take the place of slow taping and cutting with a knife. Which particular surfaces the set masks is stated on the box.
The Firefly was a British conversion of the American Sherman medium tank, into which a 17-pounder antitank gun was fitted. The longer barrel with its muzzle brake and the radio moved into a box on the turret rear make the Firefly an easily recognized type. The VC designation belongs to the version based on the Sherman V, that is the pattern with a multibank engine arrangement and a longer hull. It was in service from 1944 and was used in Western Europe.
British tanks of the late war were commonly sprayed in a uniform dark olive color, on a number of vehicles with irregular dark stripes added. That is exactly the kind of dividing edge that masks handle best. Work from the lighter shade to the darker one, lay the mask on a perfectly dry coat and press the edges down with a toothpick. Spray thinly and in two passes, or a step will form at the edge. Take the mask off at an angle to the side while the paint is freshly dry. The decals, the clear coat and the weathering come at the end; the edges of the tracks and the fenders will take heavier dust and mud.
The set is not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
