About product

Imitations of the glass of the observation devices of the M109A7 Paladin, 1:35

An add-on for a finished model of the M109A7 Paladin self-propelled howitzer in 1:35. The set replaces hand-painting the glass of the observation devices with items that are seated straight into their seats. It is not a kit, nor a structural part; it goes onto the model right at the end.

Where it tells on the howitzer

The Paladin has a tall, angular superstructure, and the crew sees out of it only through a set of periscopes spread across the hatches and the commander's cupola. The model thus ends up in a situation where most of the surface is one large single-color area, and the only things that break it up are exactly the vision blocks, the headlights and the tools. When the vision blocks are painted in the same matte color as the rest, that area stays dead; when they have a gloss of their own, there is at once something on the model to catch the eye.

The size of the item and the scale

The 1:35 scale is ideal for this kind of add-on. A single periscope is large enough that you notice both a reflection and a color cast on it, and at the same time small enough that it comes out badly with a brush. On a model in 1:72 the item would already be on the edge of what can be made out, and the difference against ordinary dark paint would practically disappear. The set is therefore tied to one scale and to the layout of the devices on the Panda kit.

Recommended procedure

  • Finish the model, spray it and let the clear coat cure fully.
  • Clear the seats of the vision blocks of dust; an item has to sit flush.
  • Carry the items with tweezers, not with fingers.
  • Apply the dust and mud on the howitzer only once the glass is seated, and keep clear of the glass.

Who the set is for

For the modeler who builds modern artillery equipment in 1:35 and wants the optics handled exactly, and for anyone looking for a quick improvement in the look of a finished model.

This is an add-on to a plastic model. The base Panda kit, the paints and the glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a finishing add-on to a completed M109A7 Paladin model in 1:35 that deals only with the glass of the observation devices.

The Paladin has a broad single-color superstructure. Glossy vision blocks are one of the few places that break that area up optically.

No. The items are cut to the dimensions and layout of the devices in 1:35; in a smaller scale they will not fit and the difference would disappear anyway.

For the Panda kit in 1:35. The base kit is not included in the package.
