MiG-23M – a masking set in 1:48 (SX-Art) is a set of pre-cut templates for the kit of this variable-geometry aircraft from the maker Trumpeter. It is an add-on for painting, not a model.

Pre-cut masking templates from the SX-Art brand for a model of the MiG-23M aircraft in 1:48 from the maker Trumpeter. The set is cut to the shapes of a particular kit, so when painting, tracing and cutting tape falls away. It is not a kit of the aircraft; the model itself has to be had.
The MiG-23M is a single-engined combat aircraft with a variable-geometry wing. The outer parts of the wing swivel between a spread and a swept position, the fuselage is slender with side air intakes, and under the tail section there is a folding ventral fin. A design with a moving wing means large dividing gaps on both the upper and the lower side.
A moving wing is a particular problem for masking. The pattern has to make sense in the position in which you build the model, and the boundary of the color fields passes across the gap between the fixed and the swiveling part of the wing. When the pattern is stuck on without regard to the gap, the lines part once the wing is spread. A template fixes the shape of a field and holds it the same on the left and the right. The second sensitive area is the side air intakes, where the surface changes direction several times over and tape cut by hand crumples there. Stick the mask on in sections, press the edges down with a toothpick and spray thinly. Anyone building an aircraft with a less regular finish can add blotches freehand with very thinned paint once the masks are off and revive the crossing of the rivet lines with a light overspray.
This is a masking add-on, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
